My name is Ashlynn Dean. I am a student Journalist in Boston, Ma. I come from a small town in northern Massachusetts. I grew up as the oldest daughter with three younger siblings in a blue-color household. My father was always watching news while I was growing up so inherently I was too. Funny enough my first dream job in kindergarten was to be a weatherwoman on the TV and at Nissitissit middle school my best friend and I founded NMSTV where we broadcasted once a week before school.
As a typical new-englander I attended a private catholic highschool in new hampshire called Bishop Guertin. There, is where I truly discovered my love for journalism and media because of one teacher who recognized me and my talents and built a media workshop to help me after school.
The type of community I grew up in Journalism is almost non-existent. My community has limited access to local news which was a major influence and inspiration to my career. My mother ran for selectman in my town and this was the first time I saw how communities find and react to local news. What did I find? the extreme relevance Facebook and social media had. Ever since I have focussed on digital journalism and writing for websites that have had much better engagement than anything else.
As a junior at Suffolk university majoring in Journalism with a minor in Political science most of my work currently revolves around the university itself. My professional goals are forever evolving. If you would have asked me my main goal as a freshman I would have responded with political reporting all around the city of Boston. Now I have a much deeper passion for the evolving landscape of the field and understanding of newsroom culture. I do still write and report primarily but I have also extended my skillset to producing and editing videos, managing my website and social media, and becoming more familiar with digital journalism. In my professional career any spot in the newsroom would satisfy me as long as I am able to exercise my skillsets and life experiences.
My personal hobbies and interests are also supplemental to my career goals. Along with my professional media, I have personal media as well. There I am able to produce more personal videos that showcase my life, family, and friends. My personal media I use as practice and development so that my professional work is top quality for readers and watchers like you to enjoy.
